The Ultimate Packing Checklist For Your Gym Bag

Starting a gym can be a daunting experience. From getting to grips with the various pieces of equipment to planning out an effective workout regime, you’d be forgiven for initially feeling a little out of your comfort zone. That said, a productive gym session can be tremendously rewarding. The very last thing you need after psyching yourself up for a workout is to have forgotten your gym shoes or something equally important. To help you get the very best out of your gym membership, here is a gym bag checklist so you can rest assured you have everything you need to smash your fitness goals.

Workout Clothing

You may be more than happy to travel to and from the gym wearing your workout gear; however, this isn’t always possible for those with a busy schedule. If you’ve come straight from work or are planning on meeting a friend for lunch after your session, you’ll want to keep your sweaty gym clothes thoroughly separate. Fortunately, gym clothes are typically lightweight and easy to pack into even the smallest bag.

Water Bottle

Regardless of your individual fitness goals, hydration is key. Some gyms feature water fountains and vending machines where you can grab a bottle of water or an electrolyte sports drink in a pinch. That said, you may find it much easier to stay hydrated by keeping an insulated reusable water bottle close for cool, refreshing water throughout your session.

Headphones

A good workout is always accompanied by a motivational playlist - music can distract you from fatigue and boost your mood, improving the quality of your session. Noise-reducing wireless earbuds are excellent for gym sessions due to their lack of tangle-prone wires. Whether your gym soundtrack is your favourite album or a go-to podcast, don’t forget to charge your earbuds and pack them safely into your bag.

Toiletries

Hopping in a steamy shower after a productive gym session always feels incredible. Make sure you pack all of your shower essentials so you can go about the rest of your day feeling fresh and presentable. You may wish to include moisturiser and skin care products, particularly if your workout involves a dip in the pool, as chlorinated water is notorious for stripping the skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and irritated.

Towel

You’ve probably already packed a post-shower towel, but you may also wish to pack a microfibre towel for wiping down high-touch equipment like training benches. Ensuring the equipment you have used is clean, dry and ready for the next person is an exercise of safety and common courtesy. Furthermore, you can use a microfiber towel to keep yourself dry during high-intensity workouts.

Snacks

Ensure you’re never caught off-guard with a sudden drop in energy levels by packing pre and post-workout snacks, such as raw nuts, energy bars, fresh fruit and protein shakes. Additionally, you could grab some energy gel packs Links to an external site.. Full of carbohydrates and electrolytes, energy gel is a fantastic, convenient way to replace depleted carbohydrate stores during training and endurance sports.

Hair Ties And Headbands

There is nothing worse than a face full of unruly hair while you’re trying to focus on your goals. Keep your mane at bay with a handy pack of hair ties and a headband or clips to fasten things in place. Keeping your hair away from exposed sweaty skin will also help you feel cooler during strenuous activities.

Workout Equipment

Some activities require specific items of kit, clothing and equipment. For example, if you’re attending a yoga class, you’ll likely need a yoga mat, block and strap. Some gyms will provide patrons with all the necessary components, but many gym goers prefer to use their own items. You may also require accessories such as gloves or liquid chalk for safe, comfortable and effective weight-lifting.

Smartwatch

Smartwatches have a myriad of features that can aid and enrich your workout experience depending on your goals. For example, you can monitor your steps, heart rate, and track the number of calories lost throughout your session. Smartwatches are generally compact, lightweight and synchronise with your smartphone or tablet, so you can review vital information regarding your workout once you’re home.
