Jeremy’s life gets a lot more exciting when he and his dragon hatch an egg. But he doesn’t think that it’s real.

Readers said they found this a thrilling tale with a complex plot and great character development. It’s a must read for all dragon lovers! Familiarity with the Dragonlance universe is helpful but not necessary.
The Blue Sword

A Newbery Honor Book in 1983, The Blue Sword tells the story of orphan Harry Crewe—a girl who calls herself Angharad—living at a Homelander fort on a frontier town in the desert country that shares its land with secretive Hillfolk. But when the golden-eyed King Corlath of Damar, who commands the Free Hillfolk, comes to town, he reveals that Harry has an amazing power, called kelar, which makes her able to see into the future and speak in their language. He also reveals her destiny: that she will become Harimad-sol, King’s Rider and bearer of the Blue Sword, Gonturan, which no woman has wielded since Lady Aerin, generations ago.

McKinley does a great job of creating her world. It feels like an alternative early 19th century, a bit of a cross between the Wild West and the British Raj (depending on your perspective). She also demonstrates her ability to write believable characters in a variety of roles. And if you like stories about strong women matched with equally strong men—with dragons and other magical creatures thrown in for good measure—you will love this one.
Dragon Books for Adults

This book series is about a planet that was colonized centuries ago by people who lost touch with their home world. The colony has regressed to pre-technological life and is threatened by a deadly space rain called Thread, which devours all that it touches. The major defense against Thread are the dragons, genetically engineered to communicate telepathically with their riders and to burn any strands of the space rain that reach the surface of Pern.

The first book in the series is Dragonflight and talks about a young girl named Menolly who dreams of becoming a Harper of Pern. She goes to study under a Masterharper and learns that there is more to this trade than music alone.

She then meets a young man who is going out to become a dragonrider and she bonds with him. This is where the real fun begins as they get to go out and ride the dragons of Pern. It is a very exciting book and it is one of the best books in the series.
The Dragonslayers

This one is for those who enjoy reading books that have a lot of action and adventure. It features a girl named Ivy and her life gets very wild when she encounters a dragon.

The story takes place in a world where the dragons are god-like beings that are very powerful. When one of the dragons is killed, it causes a huge ripple in the universe. It’s up to a few friends, including Major Heathrow Kristoff and Edwarth Thizwerks Markwhistle, to discover who is behind the killing.

Naomi Novik is a fantasy writing powerhouse and she brings that expertise to this exciting book. She’s known for her character development and amazing imagination. In this book, she introduces readers to the noble fighting dragon Temeraire and his human master Captain Will Laurence. This is the first book in the series, but there are many more to follow.
The Dragonslayer’s Daughter

This medieval dragon series is a fun read. It’s also filled with moral dilemmas that give kids something to think about. For example, when the king negotiates a deal with the dragon that will hurt his people, Gill must decide whether it’s the right thing to do.

In addition, Grizelda believes that her father’s death was because King Mildred drafted him while his family was still alive. Her revenge includes trying to slay Brian, who has a birthmark that looks like a dragon’s head. This piques the interest of Princess Wilhelmina, who has her own idea of how to deal with the situation.

Readers will love the way that Wiglaf and his friends grow from book to book. The books are funny and full of interesting twists on the legends of Camelot. However, they are a little short on the action and adventure that fans of this genre would expect. Families can use this series to discuss how children learn to take charge of their own lives. They can also talk about the importance of friendship and the value of facing one’s fears.
The Dragon’s Gift

When Cass, Del and Nix wake up in a cold, dark place they do not know how they got there. Their only clue is that they are in danger. They find that they have been given a piece of dragon soul which gives them forbidden and deadly magic, though it also helps them to find treasure.

Deborah Brautigam is a writer and scholar with decades of experience in Africa and China. Her book, The Dragon’s Gift, "examines the complex reality of contemporary Chinese relations with Africa, locating them within their proper historical context and challenging many of the myths and misinformation that dominate both press reports and some academic studies of China in Africa."

Jed often gets asked which of his designs is his favorite, and while it is difficult to choose, this one definitely ranks high on the list. The colors and the detail in this print really capture a sense of wonder and fantasy that is so iconic to the He-Man story. It is a tribute to the great work that was done by the He-Man writers and the Filmation crew.
